IMPORTANCE OF PREPPING WHILE OUTDOORS

Establishing objectives and trip goals by members and the leaders are extremely significant. Preparations while engaging in a formal trip planning process are a must in an expedition.

Why is it important to be prepared?

A good and memorable trip is always the one that ensures quality, safety and is filled with environmentally sound experiences. Addressing the resources, equipment, participants, rationing, and having an emergency plan are required to alleviate many potential problems. It takes no time for Mother Nature to go from beautiful to deadly making outdoor activities unpredictable. Disasters like flash floods, lightning incidences, earthquakes, and avalanches can come out of nowhere. Hence; it is noteworthy that planning for the unexpected is done before you head outdoors to save yourself and other team members from being harmed.

How to be prepared for such situations?

  • When hiking as a group, everyone sticks together. Before actively deciding to break off, discuss a meet-up plan because there is no guarantee of cell phone service. This will truly help in emergency situations.

  • Water is a top priority. One gallon of water per person per day for 3 days is recommended for disaster management.

  • An emergency disaster kit should be carried along especially during rock climbing with some way of purifying water.

  • A lot of tasks become difficult when the sun goes down. Communal lighting can help encourage a social atmosphere and headlamps are good for personal lights.

  • Every time a camping trip is planned, dried meals for outside adventures, as well as emergency disasters, should be carried.

  • Practice with your gear regularly. Your gears is crucial to your safety. Always keep an eye on out for wear and tear.

  • The tents and blankets should be waterproof.

  • It is essential to layer versatile-type clothing. Different weather conditions make this important. Its a matter of remaining dry during wet conditions. A waterproof shell is a handy item to pack

What if you experience unpredictable weather conditions?

FLASH FLOODS

Flash floods are very fast and are a result of heavy rainfalls. Keep a check on weather updates. In case it occurs, move to higher ground even if you are in a vehicle. Do not try to move through the water.

WILDFIRE

Be prepared for it while camping in a forest. Monitor local fire reports. In case of any news, move away from that area or go in a car and roll up the windows.

LIGHTNING

In case of hiking, plan an early morning ascent and come back before noon. Head to the lower ground if you see any dark clouds. Hair standing on end is a sign of an imminent lightning strike.

AVALANCHE

Know how they occur and its likelihood. Swim through the snow and try to stay on top if caught in an avalanche. You need to be on top and avoid hitting debris.
